Multi-Cultural Psychotherapy

Psylutions Ground Breaking Research

Training and education in psychotherapy have long wrestled with the importance of cultural competence in the helping professions. Developing culturally competent therapists, supervisors and trainees has proven to be a major challenge when race-related issues are involved.

Therapist’s education and training frequently present multiple opportunities for teachers and trainees to utilize dialogues on multiculturalism as a means to increase mutual respect and understanding. Yet, honest discussions on how to bring up the topic of race and culture have proven to be a major challenge for many supervisors, educators and trainees.  These specialists appear reluctant or ambivalent in addressing how the practical aspects of these topics can be transferred from the training room into the therapeutic setting with persons of color, or even amongst themselves.

Uzma Durrani’s (Clinical Director) PhD study employed a qualitative method utilizing cooperative inquiry over a 7 month period, to investigate, ‘What practical cultural skills are there to be a BME /multicultural therapist’.  The results showed that by employing six findings over three phases of training would greatly benefit both the professionals and their clients. In fact, the phrase “going postal” has entered the common US lexicon, and is now used to describe any person who becomes aggressive at work due to general frustration.
